Senate approves measure to strip municipalities of zoning power over gas drilling

We recently wrote about a new Pennsylvania law updating the state’s old Oil and Gas Act which may end up restricting municipalities from zoning and regulating hydraulic fracturing, popularly known as “fracking.” As we noted, hydraulic fracturing is a process used to release petroleum, natural gas, coal seam gas or other underground substances for extraction.

Construction market shows multifamily dwellings projects doing well

New information provided by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of new housing projects increased 9.3 percent in November to make for the biggest increase in 19 months. Multifamily projects saw much greater increases than other proejcts, however, having risen 23.5 percent from last year.

Developer to construct stadium complex in South Philadelphia

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore-based Cordish Cos. will soon be engaging in a stadium-area development project in South Philadelphia by the name of Philly LIVE! on Pattison Ave. Plans for the restaurant-entertainment district were presented at the stadium complex on Thursday.

Casino investment group encounters mix up with appeal of license revocation

Our readers may be aware of the recent developments with regard to a Casino planned for South Philadelphia. The investors behind the project had their casino license revoked by the Gaming Control Board last year after repeated delays in beginning construction.

Regional developer and bank reach settlement over financing dispute

A nearly year-long suit between Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania and developer Brian O-Neill-one of the region’s most active developers of residential and commercial properties, reportedly ended in a settlement last Friday. O’Neill initially sought $8 billion in damages in the suit, which he filed in January in the midst of a difficult construction economy.

On this blog, we try to give our readers a sense of the types of issues that can come up in real estate law. We recently came across an article from a news source for the city of Lakewood, Ohio. The story dealt with issues of zoning, specifically in regard to restaurants and commercial properties. This particular issue is important, particularly in a time when business owners struggle to keep their operations afloat. Zoning often has a direct impact on the health of a business.

Construction spending increases in Philly in 2011

In our last post, we noted that nationwide spending on construction has increased for the third month in a row for both housing and commercial projects. Residential properties include not only single-family housing, but also apartment dwellings. Commercial projects include a number of different types of property, ranging from educational and hotel projects, to religious and manufacturing properties.

Nationwide construction spending increases for third month in a row

Nationwide construction spending in October reportedly rose 0.8 percent from September, marking the third month in a row of increased spending on housing and commercial project construction. Spending in August and September apparently increased by 0.2 percent each month, making the October increases significant.
